Editing Flashbacks!

Once we had firstly gone out to film the first scene where we were at the pub, we has to film the three flashbacks. As none if us had used final cut before, we had to play around with it abit to get the jist of it. Howeve ronce we got use to it, it was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed usoing it. All three of us had a part in editing, with us all agreeing on each clip, were to cut it and how to put it in with each clip in an order we all were happy with. We bthen had to put all the sound and effects in that were appropiate to the theme of are film. When we has refilmed some bit and donme the second shooting on the loaction 2, we had to then edit that up and start putting it together. This was very exciting as we could start seeing it all coming together. We made 2 drafts of what it could be untill we had are final film. We gave this to one of our teachers to get a verdict of what they thought. However there were a few things we could touch up.

Filming flashbacks!

Once we had done all our storyboards, shot lists and locations we finally went out to film. We orginally started filming in location 1 were we started on the first flashback. From here we eanted to get as much filming done as possible making the editing part of the process as easy as possible. We done all 3 flashbacks in that one day which was really good. From here we had lots of clips that were all needed to edit. We then went out again to reshoot some shot from the pub and finalize our scene were the main character gets beaten up. On this part we had to think really carefully getting as many shots as possible and cut them as quickly as possible. We then filmed in the presant part of our film. This was alot easier as it wasnt as much, however we still wanted to get alot of shots in to show how he was beaten up. All we need to do now was edit it all and do any pollishing up.

target audiance slide and results of test

As a result tof the questionnaire we have decided to aim our film 'Flashback' to a small niche audience as its going to be a thriller with a twist, not only that but it will not catch mainstream viewers as it will not have major special effects and the professionalism of the major six production companys. The film will hopefully catch the audience's eyes and the film with surely keep them entertain. Our target audience would be aimed at 15 to 40 year old males, it would attract more of the younger generation as they are the people that are more related the film. Female viewers may like this film but it is mainly aimed at males as they tend to favour this genre.

The Results of are questionaire were that the most favourite films were, Dark Knight, Gone in Sixty Seconds and Mission Impossible, which all have similar kind of genres which relate to the genre of our film. The two favourite genres which were selected were Comedy and Action/Adventure and Thriller. Most people thought that Thriller was a interesting genre as they are also suprises in the films which are in this genre. The favourite filmed varied but the majority were Action/Adventure. And finally everyone said that yes that they would watch our two minute opening to our film, which is very good.

re-shooting and finalizing our film!

After showing it to our teachers, there were a few things that needed touching up on such as sound, filimg and editing. There were a couple of tiny parts that we needed to re-shoot, so again we went out and finished off the tiny touches. Once we had done this, we then had to re-edit these parts. It took a bit of time, but it was deffinatley worth it. Although we had to re-edit these parts we also needed to patch up on the music, as it didnt go that well with the theme of our film. Finally we had to put all the credits in, and the final effects that goes into the film.  After re-doing the music, filming, editing and effects we put it all together, creating are final peice. We all agreed on the final product, and was all happy that we had finally finished.

Location 2 - Bedroom, kitchen and hall way

In the second location, all the scenes are in the present day of our film. We chose to have it in a nice domestic house, where it is modern and well spaced. This helped to show the character that we was trying to build. The bedroom, was a nice spacious room that helped us get some goods camera shots, and good angles on the character. We also chose to use the stairway/hallway to again get some good shots of him before leaving the house. Again this all linked him from the bedroom to the hallway to the kitchen. With the kitchen we needed it to be nice and spacey. We decided that the one we used was perffect, as we got all the angles and camera shots in to give a varitey of different shot in the scenes of our film.

Location 1 - The black horse pub, alley and longmead road!

Our first location was all about the main character getting beaten up and coming from the alley way very drunk. This is also where you first see the two thugs that beats him up. We chose the location of the pub as its very relevant to have it next to an alley way. This helped link both the pub and longmead road together, which is what we as a group wanted to have. The pub was also very relevant as it had alot of ways you couls film it with many different angles. As a group, Booom productions thought nthat it would be the perfect lovcation to have him coming from the pub as the opening shot for our film. It would help to create tension of the dark alley way to him getting beaten up as well. The alley way is also vey long and dark, which helps the suspense of the film build up, making the audiance think nthat something is going to happen.

Risk Assessment

Once we had decided that are loctations were set, we knew that there were many hazards and risks we needed to look in to. We looked at the props and scenes that could be a risk to both us and anyone else. Below is a sheet to show what we looked into.

Before we went to film, we filled out this risk assesment sheet which is showed to our teacher to allow us to proceed filming our ideas in a safe environment.

How are film relates to other media texts!

You can immediatley tell that this film is very edgy at all times with the way the charcter is acting towards people. The camera shots/angles that are used in this film opening are very broad, as there is a lot of suspense and drama throughout. More angles and camera shots help resembele the sort of charcter that is pappering towards the audiance. Not only that but more camera shots/angles are used to create snares and make the audience believe something else. Also there is a lot of shots that are trying to help build up the character and show how he is as a person. You notice that he is very protective and it come acroos when watching this. The editing used in the opening of the Taken is related very well to the conventions of its genre. Fast frequent cuts are used for suspense and drama and these cuts add to the atmosphere. Not only that but there is a lot of 180 degree and 30 degree editing which makes the audience have a sense of what is happening in the opening of this film. These editing techniques are used to create a tense and suspense atmosphere.
The sound effects and music, which are used in the opening of this film, are loud and deep sounds and the tempo of the music and sounds are fast to relate to the fast frequent cuts and to add the suspense and drama. There is alot of dialogue in the opening of this film as the audience have a lot to take in from the character of the film early on. The main veiw i got from this opening, is that its based around this character to help show his paticular characteristics.

where are name and logo came from

The name of our production comapany is called BoooM Proudctionz, we decided to come up with this name as it had that kind of ring to it, that all of us liked, resulting us in picking this as I our name for our company. We then had to decide to come up with a logo, we decided to make something that was simple but effective, after discussing in what it should look like, we finally came up with this logo, which can be seen below.

Priliminary task set + how we did

Our teacher set us a task we had to do to get an idea of some camera shot, angles and then editing techniques. Me, Ric and Luke all done it together. We had to follow the criteria of what to include, however we could do what we wanted in what the characters said. We had to include the follwing techniques in are scene.
  • Match on action
  • Shot reverse shot
  • 180 degree rule
The task in which we have been given must include the following things:
  • Character opening a door crossing a room and sitting down.
  • Then they speak to another character across the room use a couple of lines of dialogue
  • And the three criteria include while this is being filmed
How we did
Me and Luke were the people who done the camera work, where Ric and a friend willing to help were the actors in the scene. It was more difficult than exspected but we got the job done. We manged to put the three shots we had to, and edited it well so it looked as smooth as we could do it. However there was alot of room for improvement, which would improve in our main film

Idea Generation

Boom production firstly had three rough ideas of what we wanted to do. We looked into these ideas in more depth and finally came up with one. This idea had all the other ideas into it, which is why we all agreed on it.The idea was of a ,man who has just come out of a pub drunk, and goes down an alley. When he comes out, he sees two thugs that are on the street. He looks at them then walks past, where they follow and eventually jump him. In the morning he wakes up and sees his face, where he then has two flashbacks of what happened. This would leave an enigma oin the audience to who did it and why did they do it. We then called the film "FLASHBACK" because of the fact that the flashback he is getting is helping him to remeber, and also its very catchy and immediatley draws the audiance in. We then came up with a shot list, which i have already put up to help show you how we wnated to film it.

3 Film openings & Similarities

Introduction

In this section of my blog i will be discussing three fuilm openings with similare opening 2 minute scens.
These films are:
  • Step Brothers
  • White chicks
  • Role models
The reason i chose to discuss these 3 films, is because they are all under comedy genre.

Step Brothers is the first of my three films that i am discussing. Its a 2008 american comedy starring Will Ferrell and Jon C. Reilly directed by Adam Mckay. It is distributed by columbia pictures, in which had a film budget of $65 million, grossing at a total of $128 million. The main idea of the film is all about two men who still live at home with their parents. They both become uinited with their single parents meeting together, which then get married. The opening sequance involves the two single parents meeting eachother and getting married, and moving in together. The atmosphere is very upbeat and happy with the parents all jolly, however there is a sense of rivalry between the two "step brothers" which is beginning to reveal.

White chicks is a 2004 american film directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans. The film was produced by columbia pictures and revolution studios. The plot begins in a convenience store where two FBI agents and brothers, Kevin Copeland and Marcus Copeland try to capture members of an organization that sells drugs inside ice cream boxes, posing as dominican clerks. Unfortunately, the first arrival turns out to be a genuine ice cream delivery, and the actual drug dealers manage to get away. The situation is worsened by the fact that Kevin and Marcus have decided to resolve this bust by themselves. The music is non-diegetic ganster rap music, trying to hepl show who the film is aimed at and suggests the generation of the film.

Role Models is a 2008 American comedy film directed by David Wain about two energy drink salesmen who are ordered to perform 150 hours of community service as punishment for various offenses. For their service, the two men work at a program designed to pair kids with adult role models.Danny Donahue  and Anson Wheeler work to promote an energy drink, "Minotaur", to school children, and to encourage kids to stay off drugs. Wheeler loves the job, Danny hates it, viewing it as a mindless, dead-end job. They result in getting arrested for trying to get away from their van being towed.

3 Opening Films & Similarities

Introduction

This part of my blog will talk about 3 film openings that are similar to my media product. These films are:

  • Adulthood
  • Green Street
  • Football Factory
The reason I have chosen these films are because they are all films that contain violence.
Adulthood

Adulthood is a British drama production directed and starring Noel Clarke. This is the sequel to Kidulthood also written by Clarke. The film is distributed by Pathe Pictures International and gained total gross revenue of £3,347,811. The story follows guy who has been released from prison for six years for murder. The film begins with an establishing shot of a street gathering that involved alcohol and loud music. What follows this is that an expansive looking car pulls up which triggers the opportunity for teenagers to smash the car up. This film represents stereotypical teenagers roaming the streets of London getting up to no good.

Green Street

Green Street is a film directed by Lexi Alexander showing people across the world football hooliganism in England. The 2005 British and American drama film shows the insight of violence behind the beautiful game. They show this through the four technical codes of camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene. The story follows a guy who has been kicked out of college for being accused for drug dealing and falls in with the now famous West Ham United football firm. The film was distributed by Baker Street OddLot Entertainment and the music was created by Terrence Jay. I feel that this film is similar to our media product because due to the violence and alcohol occurs.

Football Factory

The film football factory is another football film that displays hooliganism within the sport. The 2004 film directed by Nick Love stars Danny Dyer and Frank Harper. It is also based on the novel with the same name written by John King. As for the film, it reflects on two rivalled football supporters, Chelsea and Millwall. It follows a young single guy who begins to doubt himself and re-thinks his actions of being a hooligan. The film was distributed by Momentum Pictures with music produced by Ivor Guest. This film is very similar to Green Street which therefore means that it is similar to our media product again due to the fact that the characters are under the influence of violence and alcohol.

Initial ideas

Me and my group have come up with a few initial ideas, where we will decide which one we are going to use for are final 2 minute clip to an opening film. Are initial ideas were:

1. A buisnessman who is a hitman, and was ordered to kill somoeone for a mission, and then recieving a package including lots of money. would be based around a train station, or train tracks.

2. A man who is spiked at a club, and cannot remember what happens. In the morning he has a few items on him that remind him of what happened the previous night.

3. Would be based around 2, but a different location, and instead of going to a club, its to do with flashbacks, of him remembering what happened the night before, as he wakes up with loads of cuts and bruising.

outline of brief

In this post, i will be writing about a brief that was giving to us. In this brief, we were told to make a 2 minute clip to a opening of a film. We will also have to include lots of planning to are film and also evaluate are film, which all gets marked. We will need to do lots of research, including inital ideas, research into similar texts, analysing 3 similar texts, researching into potential target audiances, looking for locations, and having risk assesments. I also need to make storyboards, scripts, and write a list for shooting schedules. If we include the majority of the brief, then are fiml we hopefully be extremely well.

Introducing of group

In this project, we have been asked to create a 2 minute opening clip to a film. There is 3 people in my group, me, luke longman and ricardo leaman. We are called booom prodictions, and throughout are A/S media project we will be doing a prilimary task, lots of different essays and i will be adding clips and updates. Hopefully this blog will help show you my porogress along this media project.
